Copper Red Decorated Ewer – The Percival David Collection

Description: Decorated in underglaze copper red with classical scrolls round the foot, formalized lotus panels round the bottom of the body, with floral scrolls round the main field & bands of classical scrolls, key fret & vertically poised plantain leaves round the neck; the spout, which is tied to the neck by a decorative red & white bar, is painted with lappets & formalized flower sprays. The fluted handle is decorated outside with key fret & flower sprays & on the inner side with classic scrolls. The glazed base has grit adhering to the inside edge of the foot-ring. The join mark is clearly visible. Firing cracks at the join between the base and foot ring as well as on one small crack on the body (in the floral band).

Underglaze Blue Decorated Paint Palette and Cover – The Percival David Collection

Description: A circular paint palette and cover. The base is decorated round the side with a finely drawn diaper band, which is repeated on the side of the cover; the flat top of the cover is decorated with a man in official robes, holding a leafy branch and being transported across a rough sea in the light of the moon by a fish-dragon all within a double ring. The interior of the palette is stained red. The foot-ring is coarse and unglazed.

Turquoise Wine Jar Ming Dynasty – The Percival David Collection

Description: Porcellaneous stoneware wine jar of ‘guan’ form, with wide ovoid body, short cylindrical neck and projecting lip bound with a gilt copper band. Covered with a finely crazed turquoise glaze applied directly to the biscuit.

There is an inscription on the shoulder in relief. The glaze forms a thick welt above the base, which is unglazed and burnt brown.

Ming White Ware ‘Monk’s Cap’ Ewer – The Percival David Collection

Description: White porcelain ewer made to resemble, in profile, the cap worn by Buddhist Monks in winter, covered with a transparent grey toned glaze. Finely incised decoration under the glaze. The main decorative motif is lotus scrolls in various forms. Above the lotus scroll on the main body are the Eight Buddhist Emblems. Above the foot is a lotus panel containing a stylised flower spray. The strap handle has a ‘ruyi’ motif top & bottom with a floral scroll in between. The cover is undecorated & has a tiny knob at the back. The base is unglazed.

Dehua Figure of Bodhidharma – The Percival David Collection

Description: Finely modelled figure of a standing Bodhidharma (‘Putidamo’ or ‘Damo’ in Chinese) the reputed founder of Chan Buddhism in China. Ivory white porcelain covered with a pinkish toned glaze. Hollow on the inside, thickly made and heavy. He is shown standing bare footed with his head turned slightly, arms folded, holding a rosary and wrapped in a cape that billows at the edge. He has short curly hair, long lobed ears and an ‘urna’. The piece has a carved wooden stand.

Song Dynasty Bowl – The Percival David Collection

Description: Stoneware bowl, with rounded sides slightly constricted below the south-rim, covered inside, and outside almost to the foot with a black metallic iron spotted glaze.

The lower part of the body, low foot ring and base have been dressed with a dark brown slip through which the pale whitish body shows on the sharp edge of the foot ring.

Longquan Ware Vase – The Percival David Collection

Description: Octagonal porcelain vase of ‘meiping’ form, with slightly narrowing neck, wide shoulders that curve down to a spreading base. On each of the eight faces are three panels of moulded decoration. In the upper panel on each facet is a chrysanthemum spray, in the centre panel either a sage with a cloud scroll background, or a three flowered chrysanthemum spray; these occur alternately round the body. In the lower panel in each case the chrysanthemum spray is repeated. The centre panel on each facet is reserved in unglazed biscuit of bright rust colour against the semi-opaque greyish green glaze.

Longquan Ware Vase – The Percival David Collection

Description: Longquan Ware Vase Of pale greyish stoneware in the form of an archaic ritual bronze ‘gu’, with wide spreading base section, an enlarged cylindrical body section and a long expanding neck with the trumpet mouth slightly everted at the rim; the foot ring is a little inclined & chamfered on the inside. The base & body sections are each ornamented with relief elements resembling the jutting flange projections on the ancient bronze form. At the base of the neck are 2 shallow horizontal grooves above which, rise 4 leaf shaped blades in relief in line with the relief ornament on the lower parts. The glaze is a smooth unctuous green. Where the glaze runs thin the body shows a pale grey, where exposed at the foot ring it has burnt brown.

Description: Guan Ware Vase In the form of a jade ‘cong’ with square body and short cylindrical neck and foot; and a flat base. (It was made as a cylinder with the four corners applied). Reddish brown porcellaneous ware with opaque greenish-grey glaze, irregularly crackled. The base is bare except for a few splashes of glaze.
