Well modeled as a recumbent bixie, shown with bared teeth, bulging eyes and pricked ears, with a cylindrical collar rising from the back and detailed with combed or impressed decoration delineating the beard, mane and back above incised wings, the long applied tail with curled edges, all under a thin olive-green glaze. Western Jin dynasty (265-317)

A pair of square cups of pure white glaze over anhua decorations of a dragon fronting the rising sun. Jiu handles. On the base, within a glazed square, in raised characters is written Made By Order Of Kangxi. The cups are heavy, the glaze is solid with an undulating surface, the design is classic. Bought in Rangoon, 1928

The underside with moulded Kangxi four character marks and of the period.

A Pair Of Tongzhi Three Friends Of Winter Bowls

A pair of rare and unusual finely decorated bowls, decorated in with the three friends of winter in red and gold enamels. The ‘Three Friends of Winter’ consists of the pine, bamboo and flowering prunus blossoms. The three friends of winter design was first used in the Yuan dynasty. These three plants were particularly admired: All three represented fortitude against harsh conditions and longevity.

The underside painted with iron red Tongzhi seal marks and of the period.

Daoguang Famille Rose Sgraffito Bowl & Cover

A finely enamelled famille rose cup and cover with Zhang Guolao seated on a donkey, further decorated to the reverse with pagodas amongst stylized clouds and a crane in flight. The lid decorated similarly. All against a white sgraffito ground.

With a life expectancy of more than 20 years, cranes symbolise longevity. The Chinese word for crane, he, sounds similar to the word for ‘harmony’.

The bowl and cover are painted with an iron red Daoguang seal mark and are of the period.
